উচ্চশক্তিসম্পন্ন ফোটন যখন ইলেকট্রনের সাথে সংঘর্ষের ফলে বিক্ষিপ্ত হয়, তখন বিক্ষিপ্ত ফোটনের তরঙ্গ দৈর্ঘ্য আপতিত ফোটনের তরঙ্গ দৈর্ঘ্যের চেয়ে বেশি হয়। ১৯২৩ সালে আর্থার কম্পটন এই ঘটনা প্রমাণ করেন।
