The Village Fair I have Recently Enjoyed/ Visited

Introduction: A village fair is a part and parcel of our rural culture. In fact, a village fair bears an age-old tradition (প্রথা) in the culture of Bangladesh. No other festival in rural Bangladesh is as flamboyant (জমকালো) as a village fair. Usually it is held on the first day of Bengali new year known as Pahela Baishakh.

My participation: I had a great desire (প্রত্যাশা) to visit a village fair. At last my desire had come true when I went to visit my grandfather and grandmother living at Laksmipur in the district of Madaripur. On that day I got up early and went to the fair with my cousins. It was held in the local bazar of the village. Being there I was astonished (বিস্মিত) seeing the festive (উৎসবমূখর) mood among all the people irrespective of (নির্বিশেষে) age, sex, race and religion.

Arrangement: It was an arrangement of selling and buying, gambling (জুয়া), jugglery (ভোজবাজি) and cultural functions. The stalls of the fair were fairly decorated and arranged according to the articles. Shopkeepers, artists and artisans set up their stalls with goods such as toys, sweet-meats, cosmetics, handicrafts, tapestries, bamboo-made goods and many other attractive (আকর্ষণীয়) items. Merry-go-round, puppet show, magic show and circus were special attractions of the fair. A circus party brought tiger, elephants, monkeys and bears to entertain the viewers.

Amusements: Children and teenager boys and girls were highly amused. They enjoyed the fair to a great extent. They bought fancy goods like bangles, ribbons, bamboo flutes, balloons etc. They also bought sweetmeats and earth made dolls. They rode merry-go-round and enjoyed puppet show. I myself also enjoyed all these things to a great extent.

Conclusion: The fair was very crowded and not so tidy. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the fair to a great extent.

একটি গ্রাম্য মেলা যা আমি সম্প্রতি পরিদর্শন করেছি

সূচনা: গ্রাম্য মেলা হচ্ছে আমাদের গ্রামীণ সংস্কৃতির অবিচ্ছেদ্য অঙ্গ। আসলে বাংলাদেশের সংস্কৃতিতে গ্রাম্যমেলার রয়েছে যুগ-যুগান্তরের ঐতিহ্য। সাধারণত এটি পহেলা বৈশাখ হিসেবে পরিচিত বাংলা নতুন বছরের প্রথম দিনে অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।

আমার অংশগ্রহণ: একটা গ্রাম্য মেলা পরিদর্শন করার একটা তীব্র আকাঙ্ক্ষা আমার ছিল। অবশ্য আমার আকাঙ্ক্ষা পূরণ হল যখন আমি মাদারীপুর জেলার লক্ষ্মীপুরে বসবাসরত আমার দাদা-দাদীকে দেখতে গিয়েছিলাম। সেদিন আমি খুব ভোরে ঘুম থেকে উঠি আর আমার চাচাতো ভাইয়ের সাথে সেই মেলায় গিয়েছিলাম। এটি সেই গ্রামের স্থানীয় বাজারে অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছিল। সেখানে গিয়ে বয়স, নারী-পুরুষ, জাতি, ধর্ম নির্বিশেষে সকল মানুষ-এর মধ্যে উৎসবমুখর ভাব দেখে বিস্মিত হয়েছি।

আয়োজন: এ ছিল কেনা-বেচা, জুয়াখেলা, ভোজবাজি এবং সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠানাদির এক আয়োজন। মেলার স্টলগুলো সুন্দরভাবে সাজানো হয়েছিল আর তা হয়েছিল সামগ্রী-ভিত্তিক। দোকানদার, শিল্পী, ও হস্তশিল্পীরা তাদের নামগ্রী যেমন-খেলনা, মিষ্টান্ন, কসমেটিক্স, হস্তশিল্প, মৃতশিল্প, বাঁশ-নির্মিত সামগ্রী এবং আরও অন্যান্য আকর্ষণীয় সামগ্রী দিয়ে তাদের স্টল সাজিয়েছিল। নাগরদোলা, পুতুল নাচ, যাদু প্রদর্শন, সার্কাস ইত্যাদি ছিল মেলার বিশেষ আকর্ষণ। একটা সার্কাস দল বাঘ, হাতি, বানর ও ভাল্লুক এনেছিল দর্শকদের বিনোদনের জন্য।

আনন্দ-উল্লাস: শিশু-কিশোর কিশোরীরা অত্যন্ত আনন্দ উপভোগ করছিল। তারা শখের সামগ্রী যেমন- চুড়ি, ফিতা, বাঁশের বাঁশি, বেলুন ইত্যাদি কিনেছিল। তারা মিষ্টান্ন ও মাটির তৈরি পুতুল কিনেছিল। তারা নাগর-দোলায় চড়েছিল। আমি নিজেও এসব খুব উপভোগ করেছিলাম।

উপসংহার: মেলাটি ছিল অত্যন্ত জনাকীর্ণ আর ছিল না ততটা পরিচ্ছন্ন। তথপি, আমি মেলাটি বেশ উপভোগ করেছি।

Being there I was astonished seeing the festive mood among all the people from all avenues of life.
