Rivers of Bangladesh

Introduction: Bangladesh is a land of rivers. She is in fact cross-crossed by numerous rivers. These rivers are very useful to the overall development of the country. The rivers here are full to the brim in the rainy season. But in winter they take a very shabby (মলিন) look.

Main rivers: There are many rivers in Bangladesh. Of them the Padma, the Meghna, the Jamuna, the Karnaphuli, the Brahammaputra etc are the big and main rivers. Apart from these, there are many other small rivers almost all over the country.

Importance of rivers: The rivers of Bangladesh play a very important role in various sectors.

Firstly, they are a huge source of fishes. Actually the rivers are a real sanctuary (অভয়ারণ্য) of fishes which is one of our main food items. Secondly the agriculture sector of our country largely depends on these rivers for irrigation (সেচ). Thirdly, some mighty rivers are also great source of energy. For example, the hydro-electric project on the river Karnafuly can remove the power shortage of Bangladesh to a great extent. Fourthly, our rivers are the main way of communication. Moreover the rivers carry silt with them which increases the fertility (উর্বরতা) of our lands. They are also a great source of natural beauties.

Demerits: Despite many advantages, the rivers sometimes cause some sufferings to the people. The rivers often get filled by excessive (অতিরিক্ত) rainfall and cause floods. Floods bring about untold miseries (দুর্ভোগ) and misfortunes (দুর্ভাগ্য).

Conclusion: In spite of having a few negative effects, the rivers of Bangladesh play a very significant role in the socioeconomic of the country. Truly speaking, the rivers are the part and parcel of our country. They are no doubt a blessing to us as well as our country.

নদীগুলোর গুরুত্ব: বাংলাদেশের নদ-নদীগুলো বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করে। প্রথমত, ঐ নদীগুলো মাছের বড় উৎস। আসলে নদীগুলো মাছের অভয়ারণ্য যা কিনা আমাদের প্রধান প্রধান খাদ্য উপকরণগুলোর অন্যতম। দ্বিতীয়ত, আমাদের দেশের কৃষিখাত পানি সেচ এর জন্য ব্যাপকভাবে এই নদীগুলোর উপর নির্ভরশীল। তৃতীয়ত, কয়েকটি বড় নদী প্রাকৃতিক শক্তির (জ্বালানী শক্তির) একটা বড় উৎস। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, কর্ণফুলী নদীর পানি-বিদ্যুত প্রকল্প বাংলাদেশের জ্বালানী শক্তির ঘাটতি অনেকাংশেই দূর করে থাকে। চতুর্থত, আমাদের নদ-নদীগুলো যোগাযোগের প্রধান উৎস। তাছাড়া, নদীগুলোতে পলি পড়ে যা আমাদের জমির উর্বরতা বৃদ্ধি করে। এ নদীগুলো প্রাকৃতিক সৌন্দর্যেরও একটা বড় উৎস।

প্রতিবন্ধকতা: অনেকগুলো সুবিধা থাকা সত্ত্বেও মাঝে মাঝে নদীগুলো জনসাধারণকে ভোগান্তিতে ফেলে দেয়। নদীগুলো প্রায়শই অতিরিক্ত বৃষ্টিপাতের কারণে পূর্ণ হয় আর বন্যা সংঘটিত করে। বন্যা অবর্ণনীয় দূর্ভোগ ও দূর্ভাগ্য বয়ে আনে।
