A Village Market

A village market is the place where villagers come to buy and sell their daily necessary things. It is a place of great importance to the villagers. It is a daily or weekly gathering.

A village market generally sits by a river or on the bank of a canal or in a large open field or on a intersection of a road. A village market helps people come here easily, for buying and selling their goods.

There are two kinds of markets: the daily 'bazaar' and the weekly 'hat'. Goods of daily uses are available in the bazaar and other products are sold in the hat.

There are some permanent and some temporary shops in it. Grocers, tailors, doctors, potters etc. sit in their permanent sheds. The temporary shops sit in the open air with vegetables, fish, meat, pepper, oil, salt and so on. In a village market, nothing is sold at a fixed price.

A village market is very important for the villagers. Most of the daily necessaries are found in a village market. It is the meeting place of the villagers. There are some tea-stalls in a village market. The villagers exchange their views and opinions while taking tea. Another advantage of a village market is that the villagers are economically benefited by it.

Moreover, the villagers cannot go to distant city market every day to buy or sell their necessary products. The village market meets their daily needs. There are some disadvantages of a village market. It is a noisy and dirty place. It is harmful for health. For heavy crowd, some people's pockets might be picked.

Sometimes, odour from the market irritates the people. Especially the fish market is really a dirty place. Moreover, high bargaining continues between the sellers and the buyers. Buyers may be cheated in this case. Not only this, because of misunderstanding, serious quarrelsome situation occur frequently there.

It gives a great service to the rural people. They cannot do without it. It can be called the backbone of the rural economy.
