Anti-discrimination Student Movement

The Anti-discrimination Student Movement in Bangladesh took place in July 2024. It was a protest against the unfair quota system in government jobs. In June, the High Court announced a 30% quota for the descendants of freedom fighters. Since 26% of jobs were already reserved for other groups, only 44% of positions remained for general applicants. Students found this decision unfair and demanded jobs based on merit. This was the third major protest on this issue, after similar ones in 2013 and 2018. Students skipped classes, blocked roads, and staged demonstrations across the country. The protests continued intensely for days without any solution. In mid-July, the situation turned violent when armed attackers injured hundreds of protesting students. The movement quickly became a fight against the government itself. Students raised their voices against the authoritarian system. On August 3, they announced a one-point demand for the government's resignation. Finally, on August 5, the student-led movement succeeded. Their unity and determination overthrew the government. This movement became a symbol of the students' fight for fairness and justice in Bangladesh.

বাংলাদেশে বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলন হ্যয় ২০২৪ সালের জুলাই মাসে। সরকারি চাকরিতে অন্যায্য কোটা ব্যবস্থার, বিরুদ্ধে এটি একটি প্রতিবাদ ছিল। জুন মাসে হাইকোর্ট মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের বংশধরদের জন্য ৩০% কোটা ঘোষণা করে। যেহেতু ২৬% চাকরি ইতিমধ্যে অন্যান্য গোষ্ঠীর জন্য সংরক্ষিত ছিল, অবশিষ্ট মাত্র ৪৪% আসন ছিল সাধারণ প্রার্থীদের জন্য। শিক্ষার্থীরা এই সিদ্ধান্তকে অন্যায্য বলে মনে করে এবং মেধার ভিত্তিতে চাকরির দাবি জানায়। ২০১৩ এবং ২০১৮ সালে একই ধরনের প্রতিবাদের পর এই বিষয়ে এটি ছিল তৃতীয় বড় প্রতিবাদ। শিক্ষার্থীরা ক্লাস বর্জন করে, রাস্তা অবরোধ করে এবং সারা দেশে বিক্ষোভ প্রদর্শন করে। কোনও সমাধান ছাড়াই কয়েক দিন ধরে তীব্র বিক্ষোভচলতে থাকে। জুলাইয়ের মাঝামাঝি সময়ে সশস্ত্র হামলাকারীরা শত শত বিক্ষোভকারী ছাত্রকে আহত করলে পরিস্থিতি সহিংস হয়ে ওঠে। আন্দোলনটি দ্রুত সরকার বিরোধী সংগ্রামে পরিণত হয়। ছাত্ররা স্বৈরাচারী ব্যবস্থার বিরুদ্ধে সোচ্চার হয়। ৩রা আগস্ট তারা সরকার পদত্যাগের এক দফা দাবি ঘোষণা করে। অবশেষে ৫ই আগস্ট ছাত্র-নেতৃত্বাধীন আন্দোলন সফল হয়। তাদের ঐক্য ও দৃঢ় সংকল্প সরকারকে উৎখাত করে। এই আন্দোলন বাংলাদেশে ন্যায্যতা ও ন্যায়বিচারের জন্য শিক্ষার্থীদের লড়াইয়ের প্রতীক হয়ে ওঠে।
