Or, How to Fight against Dengue Fever and Face It

Dengue is a painful, debilitating mosquito-borne disease. It is borne by Aides mosquito. Tropical areas, like Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia, Southern China, Taiwan, the Pacific Islands, the Caribbean, Mexico, Africa, Central and South America are the most vulnerable areas of the world where Dengue Fever is likely to occur. Symptoms of Dengue usually begin four to six days after infection and last up to ten days. Symptoms may include sudden high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, severe joint and muscle pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, skin rash and mild bleeding. These symptoms may progress to massive bleeding, shock, and death. Surprisingly, till today, there is no specific treatment for dengue infection. Doctors generally suggest the infected people to take rest and drink plenty of fluids. One of the effective ways to prevent Dengue Fever is to prevent bites by infected mosquitoes. The best way to lessen the risk of Dengue infection is to reduce the production of Aides mosquito. We can do that by taking effective measures such as keeping our living places and neighborhoods clean. However, it is interesting to know that Aides mosquito requires just one teaspoon of water to lay its eggs and for the larvae to fully develop into an adult mosquito. That is, it can practically breed-in any place where clean standing water is available. So, we must also get rid of clogged and accumulated water so that Aides mosquitoes cannot breed.

ডেঙ্গু জ্বর

ডেঙ্গু জ্বর হচ্ছে বেদনাদায়ক, দুর্বলকারী, মশাবাহিত একটি রোগ। এটি এডিস মশাবাহিত। ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশ, দক্ষিণপূর্ব এশিয়া, দক্ষিণ চীন, তাইওয়ান, প্রশান্ত মহাসাগরীয় দ্বীপপুঞ্জ, ক্যারিবিয় এলাকা, মেক্সিকো, আফ্রিকা, মধ্য ও দক্ষিণ আমেরিকার মতো গ্রীষ্মমণ্ডলীয় এলাকাগুলো সবচেয়ে বেশি ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ এলাকা। ডেঙ্গুর লক্ষণ সাধারণত সংক্রমণের চার থেকে ছয় দিন পর দেখা দেয় এবং দশদিন পর্যন্ত চলতে পারে। লক্ষণগুলোর মধ্যে রয়েছে হঠাৎ উচ্চমাত্রার জুর, ভীষণ মাথাব্যথা, চোখের পিছনে ব্যথা, অস্থিসংযোগ ও মাংসপেশিতে ভীষণ রকমের ব্যথা, ক্লান্তি, বিতৃষ্ণাবোধ, বমি করা, চামড়ায় ফুসকুড়ি এবং মৃদু রক্তপাত। এ লক্ষণগুলো অত্যাধিক রক্তক্ষরণ, অত্যাঘাত ও মৃত্যুতে রূপ নিতে পারে। আশ্চর্যজনকভাবে, এখন পর্যন্ত ডেঙ্গু সংক্রমণের কোনো সুনির্দিষ্ট চিকিৎসা ব্যবস্থা উদ্ভাবিত হয়নি। ডাক্তাররা আক্রান্ত রোগীদেরকে সাধারণত বিশ্রাম নিতে এবং প্রচুর তরলপানীয় পান করতে বলেন। ডেঙ্গু জ্বর প্রতিরোধের অন্যতম মোক্ষম প্রতিরোধক হচ্ছে সংক্রমিত মশার কামড় এড়িয়ে চলা। এডিস মশার সংখ্যা হ্রাসকরণ হতে পারে ডেঙ্গুর ঝুঁকি কমানোর সবচেয়ে উত্তম পন্থা। আমাদের বাসস্থান ও আশ-পাশ পরিষ্কার রাখার মতো কার্যকরী পদক্ষেপ নিয়ে আমরা তা করতে পারি। তবে মজার বিষয় হচ্ছে ডিম পাড়া ও লাভা থেকে পূর্ণ মশায় পরিণত হতে এডিস মশার মাত্র এক চা চামচ পানি দরকার পড়ে। অর্থাৎ, এটি বাস্তবিকপক্ষে যেকোনো স্থানে যেখানে পরিষ্কার পানি জমে আছে সেখানে বংশ বিস্তার করতে পারে। তাই বন্ধ ও জমে থাকা পানি থেকে আমাদের রক্ষা পেতে হবে যাতে এডিস মশা বংশ বিস্তার করতে না পারে।
