Water pollution refers to the presence of impurities and harmful elements in water. Water is one of the major elements of environment. Water is called life as both animals and plants cannot survive without it. However, water is being polluted day by day for many reasons. The main reason of water pollution is the irresponsibility and unwise activities of human beings. People throw wastes into water and pollute it. Farmers use chemical fertilizers and insecticides in their fields that mix up with rainwater and flow down into rivers and canals and cause water pollution. Besides, some people make sanitary latrines by rivers, canals or drains, which greatly pollute water. Again, ships throw oil, human-wastes and other wastes into river and sea-water, which cause water pollution. Moreover, industrial plants dump waste materials and chemical wastes into water, which leads to water pollution. Polluted water is not suitable for drinking, agriculture, etc. By drinking polluted water, people become ill, sometimes even die. Fishes die in polluted water, and even farming becomes impossible in severely polluted water. However, people can stop water pollution by being conscious of it. For instance, farmers should use natural or green fertilizers in their fields. People should use sanitary latrines. Ship owners should be careful to build the bottom layer of their ships properly to stop oil sipping. Industrial plants should dispose of their wastes properly. Thus, we can prevent water pollution.

পানি দূষণ বলতে পানিতে নোংরা এবং ক্ষতিকারক উপাদানের উপস্থিতি বোঝায়। পানি পরিবেশের অন্যতম প্রধান উপাদান। পানিকে জীবন বলা হয় কারণ এটি ছাড়া প্রাণী ও উদ্ভিদ উভয়ই বেঁচে থাকতে পারে না। তবে নানা কারণে দিন দিন পানি দূষিত হচ্ছে। পানি দূষণের প্রধান কারণ হলো মানুষের দায়িত্বজ্ঞানহীন ও বিবেকহীন কর্মকাণ্ড। মানুষ পানিতে বর্জ্য ফেলে তা দূষিত করে। কৃষকরা তাদের ক্ষেতে রাসায়নিক সার এবং কীটনাশক ব্যবহার করে যা বৃষ্টির পানির সাথে মিশে নদী ও খালে প্রবাহিত হয় এবং পানি দূষণ ঘটায়। এছাড়া কেউ কেউ নদী, খাল বা নালার পাশে স্যানিটারি ল্যাট্রিন তৈরি করে, যা পানিকে ব্যাপকভাবে দূষিত করে। আবার জাহাজগুলো তেল, মানব-বর্জ্য ও অন্যান্য বর্জ্য নদী ও সমুদ্রের পানিতে ফেলে যা পানি দূষণের কারণ হয়। তদুপরি, শিল্প কারখানাগুলি বর্জ্য পদার্থ এবং রাসায়নিক বর্জ্য পানিতে ফেলে দেয়, যা পানি দূষিত করে। দূষিত পানি পান, কৃষি ইত্যাদির উপযোগী নয়। দূষিত পানি পান করে মানুষ অসুস্থ হয়, কখনো কখনো মারাও যায়। দূষিত পানিতে মাছ মারা যায়, এমনকি মারাত্মক দূষিত পানিতে চাষাবাদও অসম্ভব হয়ে পড়ে। তবে মানুষ সচেতন হয়ে পানি দূষণ বন্ধ করতে পারে। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, কৃষকদের উচিত তাদের জমিতে প্রাকৃতিক বা সবুজ সার ব্যবহার করা। মানুষের স্যানিটারি ল্যাট্রিন ব্যবহার করা উচিত। তেল চুইয়ে পড়া বন্ধ করার জন্য জাহাজের মালিকদের তাদের জাহাজের নীচের স্তরটি তৈরিতে সতর্কতা অবলম্বন করতে হবে। শিল্প কারখানা হতে বর্জ্য সঠিকভাবে নিষ্কাশন করতে হবে। তাহলেই আমরা পানি দূষণ রোধ করতে পারব।
