The first day of Bangla year is called Pahela Baishakh. This much expected day comes once a year. According to our culture and tradition, we have been celebrating this day for centuries. Moreover, we celebrate the day to welcome Bangla year formally. We welcome the day singing "Esho he Baishakh, esho esho...." The day is celebrated all over the country. The main attraction of the day starts at Ramna Batamul in Dhaka. On this day, rural people prepare special foods. They also arrange fairs at important places. On this day, shopkeepers decorate their shops, open Halkhata and offer sweets to their customers and clients. Urban people celebrate the day with much delight and interest. They eat Panta Bhat and hilsha fish in the morning. They wear traditional clothes. Young boys wear Panjabis and Pajamas, and young girls put on white Sarees with red borders. The students of the Institute of Fine Arts of Dhaka University bring out colorful procession "Mongol Jatra" on Pahela Baishakh every year. Bangla Academy, Shilpakala Academy, Chhayanat, etc, organise cultural functions in their respective premises. Actually, Pahela Baishakh is a day of great joy and significance. It reminds us of our esteemed Bangla culture and tradition.

বাংলা বছরের প্রথম দিনকে বলা হয় পহেলা বৈশাখ। এই প্রত্যাশিত দিনটি বছরে একবার আসে। আমাদের সংস্কৃতি এবং ঐতিহ্য অনুযায়ী শতাব্দী কালব্যাপী আমরা এই দিনটি উদযাপন করে আসছি। তাছাড়া বাংলা বছরকে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে স্বাগত জানানোর জন্য আমরা দিনটি উদযাপন করি। 'এসো হে বৈশাখ এসো এসো গান গেয়েই আমরা দিনটিকে স্বাগত জানাই। সারা দেশব্যাপী দিনটি উদযাপন করা হয়। দিনটির প্রধান আকর্ষণ ঢাকায় রমনার বটমূলে শুরু হয়। এই দিন গ্রামের লোকজন বিশেষ খাবার তৈরি করে। গুরুত্বপূর্ণ জয়গাগুলোতে তারা মেলার আয়োজনও করে। দিনটিতে দোকানদাররা তাদের দোকান সাজায়, হালখাতা খোলে এবং ক্রেতা ও খরিদ্দারদের মিষ্টি দেয়। শহুরে লোক অনেক বেশি আগ্রহ ও আনন্দ নিয়ে দিনটি উদ্‌যাপন করে। তারা সকালে পান্তাভাত এবং ইলিশ মাছ খায়। তারা ঐতিহ্যবাহী পোশাক পরে। তরুণরা পাঞ্জাবি, পায়জামা পরে এবং তরুণীরা লাল পাড় সাদা শাড়ি পরে। ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের চারুকলা অনুষদের ছাত্রছাত্রীরা পহেলা বৈশাখে বাণীঢ্য শোভাযাত্রা, "মঙ্গল যাত্রা" বের করে। বাংলা একাডেমি, শিল্পকলা একাডেমি, ছায়ানট, ইত্যাদি স্ব স্ব প্রাজাণে সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করে। প্রকৃতপক্ষে পহেলা বৈশাখ দিনটি অনেক আনন্দ এবং তাৎপর্যের। এ দিনটি আমাদের সমৃদ্ধ বাংলার সংস্কৃতি এবং ঐতিহ্যকে মনে করিয়ে দেয়।
